Australian man makes international headlines – by checking in a single tinnie on flight

Nearly 50,000 people have shared the story of the man – known only as Dean – who checked in a single can of Emu Export beer on a Qantas flight from Melbourne to Perth, published on the UK’s Unilad site.

Unilad spoke to Dean who says while the plan was hatched over “a few cold ones”, the execution was done sober.

“One of my mates works at the airport and he and I were wondering what I could check as luggage and get away with – a single deodorant can was another idea – but the export can was way more iconic so I went with that,” he revealed.

Staff at Melbourne’s airport took the unusual check-in in their stride, tagging the can and loading it onto the plane with the rest of the luggage.

The daring traveller wasn’t quite sure that the beer would make it on its own. “[But] sure enough there she was, alone on the carousel proudly making her way around. And there I was in my flanno and RMs to greet her. It was perfection.”

Dean now says he plans to crack the well-travelled brew once it’s cold and he’s “with the boys”.
