Hey Google … ? Aussies’ top 10 searches for 2018 revealed

The popular search engine has again compiled its list of Australia’s top searches for the year – proving once again that we’re a weird mob.

Predictably the top-searched Australian figure was former National Leaders Barnaby Joyce after a highly-publicised affair with a staffer saw him exit as Deputy Prime Minister in February.

He was closely followed by Scott Morrison and Peter Dutton (we reckon Andrew Broad may be making a late bid for top spot however).

The Republic is still clearly on hold – the royal wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle was one of the biggest stories with the former Hollywood actress – now Duchess of Sussex – beating out Demi Lovato (who?) and Freddie Mercury (surely thanks to the 2018 biopic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’) to top the list of most searched people from around the world.

We loved a good news story too – the rescue of a team of young soccer players and their coaches from an underground cave in Thailand kept us captivated.

The nation’s ever-changing politicians also captured our attention with the by-election for former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s Wentworth seat keeping us on our toes.

Howzat! Sport still No. 1

Sport still holds a special place in our hearts as well, with the World Cup and the Commonwealth Games topping our searches, though this year’s cricket scandal – which saw Australian cricket captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner banned from the game – also ranked highly with many asking, ‘What is ball tampering?’

We’re still haven’t figured out what cryptocurrency is either – ‘What is bitcoin?’ still sitting at No. 1 of the ‘What is …?’ queries.

The ‘How to …?’ list shows that privacy rather than DIY is at the top of our minds – ‘how to opt out of my health record’ was the top-rated search. We’re also keen to get rich fast with many of us asking ‘how to win Powerball’ (please let me know if you figure it out).

And despite our love of a day off, we’re perplexed by the timing and purpose of our national celebrations, asking ‘Why is State of Origin on Sunday?’, ‘Why is Australia Day Jan 26?’ and (face palm) ‘Why is ANZAC Day important?’

It could be worse though – you could be one of the people who asked Google ‘why is my poop green?’
