$7,000 grant lets green-thumbed aged care residents get back to nature
Residents at Mercy Place Montrose in Melbourne received the grant from the Andrews Foundation to fund the purchase of wheelchair-accessible planters and new gardening equipment for their Men’s Shed.
The new planters have made it easier for all of the residents to enjoy the home’s new garden beds, which they plant and maintain themselves.
A recent study of two Scottish nursing homes found gardening benefited both residents and staff by allowing them to spend more time outdoors being active and socialising.
The Montrose residents now plan to pot some of the succulents they are growing as gifts to sell at the local markets before Mother’s Day – a great way to give back to the community.
