Do you know when you need to use sunscreen? Nine out of 10 Aussies don’t
Just one in 10 Australians know sun protection is needed when UV levels are at three or higher, the Cancer Council Australia’s latest National Sun Protection Survey reports.
40 per cent of us are also confused about which weather factors cause sunburn, with one-quarter (24 per cent) wrongly thinking sunburn risk was related to temperature while another quarter (23 per cent) incorrectly naming conditions such as cloud cover, wind or humidity.
The fact is Ultraviolet Radiation is the major cause of skin cancer – and it can’t be seen or felt.
Sunscreen is just one way to protect against skin cancer, with sunglasses, long sleeves, finding shade and wearing a hat also important.
You can also download the Cancer Council’s SunSmart app for free from the App Store or Google Play for local UV alerts and sun protection times.
With previous research showing regular sunscreen use is the easiest way to prevent skin cancer, why not slip, slop, slap – and app?
