Dying to Know Day: Inspiring Australians to talk about the inevitable

Friday, 8 August marks this year’s Dying to Know Day – a national day of action that invites Australians to have open, honest conversations about death, dying, and grief.
The 2025 theme, “Nobody Knows,” takes an irreverent approach to a serious truth: if you don’t share your end-of-life wishes, your loved ones are left guessing. The result can be confusion, conflict, and missed chances for care that truly reflects your values.
At the heart of the campaign is a simple call to action: “The Secret I’m Glad I Shared.” Because if nobody knows your wishes, they never will.
Why these conversations matter
This year’s campaign highlights the importance of intergenerational conversations. According to a 2022 YouGov survey, only 53% of Australians feel comfortable talking about end-of-life matters with family members.
Dying to Know Day aims to change that by creating welcoming, inclusive spaces for people of all ages to share their stories and preferences, helping to break the silence and stigma around death and dying.
A month of events and conversations
While the official day falls on 8 August, Dying to Know Day extends throughout the month, with hundreds of events hosted across Australia. From community gatherings to storytelling sessions, these events encourage people to learn, discuss, and plan for their own end-of-life care – and support others to do the same.
