Historic Perth deaf school to become aged care home
The beachside Perth suburb of Cottesloe will have a new aged care home, with a historic deaf school to be redeveloped.
The Western Australian Government has chosen Cottesloe Living, Health & Aged Care, which is a joint venture between aged care provider Hall & Prior and the Fire and Emergency Services Superannuation Fund, will turn the Cottesloe Deaf School into residential aged care and seniors’ accommodation; the West Australian Foundation for Deaf Children will also be given new facilities to remain in the site.
According to WA Lands and Housing Minister John Carey, the redevelopment of the school – founded in 1896 before being taken over by the State Government in 1949 – will provide more certainty about aged care in the region.
“We have an ageing community, and providing quality aged care which allows people to remain within their community is absolutely critical.
“The plan also includes keeping the West Australian Foundation for Deaf Children on the site – which will continue the long association between the foundation and this iconic location.”
There are as yet no details about how many people the new facility will house.
