Intergenerational engagement brings joy, laughter and meaning

Sometimes the simplest moments – a friendly walk, a heartfelt conversation, or even meeting a turtle – can spark joy and connection across generations.
At RFBI Berry Masonic Village on the NSW South Coast, intergenerational magic is a regular event. As part of the not-for-profit’s ongoing program, the village recently welcomed back children from Natural Play Preschool, who visit residents every fortnight.
This visit came with a surprise guest: Frank the turtle, the preschool’s calm and curious pet.
“The children walked down to the Village, excited to reconnect with their older friends and proudly introduce Frank,” said an RFBI spokesperson.
“Residents were just as thrilled, spending the morning chatting, laughing and learning about the turtle alongside the children.”
These visits have become a much-loved highlight, offering more than just entertainment – they bring genuine connection, emotional enrichment, and shared delight for all involved.
Why intergenerational programs matter
Activities that bring together young and old offer powerful benefits. For older adults, they can:
- Stimulate memory
- Reduce feelings of loneliness
- Promote a sense of purpose
- Spark joy and laughter
- Foster empathy and understanding across generations
“These heartwarming sessions are made possible through the dedication of our RFBI team and the incredible collaboration with local community groups like Natural Play Preschool,” the spokesperson added.
Whether it’s a preschooler’s giggle or a gentle pat of a turtle’s shell, it’s the little moments that build lasting bonds – proving that joy truly knows no age.
