It’s all love after 70 years for Bolton Clarke's Glasshouse Views love birds

Ron and Margaret Allen are still celebrating after recently marking their platinum wedding anniversary at the residential aged care home in Beerwah, in Qld's Sunshine Coast hinterland.
“My brother lived in Sydney because he was in the Navy, so I was down there visiting him one day and he asked if I wanted to go for a game of tennis,” Ron said.
“He suggested I take his car and take Margaret out there, but I didn’t know Margaret. He said ‘Don’t worry, you’ll know her’.
“So off I went to Central Station in Sydney and saw a woman in tennis clothes and asked if she was Margaret and she said yes, got in and three months later we were married.”
Making the decision to tie the knot was easy for the couple, who instantly hit it off beyond the tennis court. Ron said he took Marg home to meet his parents in Wagga Wagga in the NSW Riverina region, right away.
“It was anything but a typical wedding! Our friend Harry offered to make our cake but on the morning of the wedding he hadn’t brought the cake to us.
“We went out to Harry’s to pick it up and he said ‘oh, is that today? I thought it was next week!’, but he had a different cake ready and used that while we waited for him to decorate it.
“When we got back to Margaret’s house with the cake, all her neighbours were waiting outside to see the bride, but she was still in her jeans!”
Rushing to the altar, Ron and Marg got ready and ended up being half an hour late but it’s something the couple say they didn’t even notice at the time.
“My family all came up from the country, but the driver took them to the wrong church, so my mother didn’t get to see us get married,” Ron said.
“But it all didn’t seem to worry us. I think I was a few feet off the ground the whole time anyway – it was good fun!”
Now after seven decades together, the couple have raised three children, eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren – and are now eagerly waiting for some great great grandchildren!
“My marriage advice would be to not go to bed angry – I know it’s an old saying but it’s true,” said Marg from Bolton Clarke Glasshouse Views aged care home. “You don’t carry it through to the next day if you can help it.”
