First Community Pocket Forest is taking root in Mission Australia’s Benjamin Short Grove aged care home

It is well-documented mental health problems are highest in older people.
Australian Government’s Australian Institute of Health and Welfare states between 1 July 2017 and 30 June 2022, at entry to permanent residential aged care, on average 57.7% of all people aged 65 years and over and 58.6% of First Nations people aged 50 years and over were recorded with a mental health condition on their aged care eligibility assessment or their residential aged care funding assessment.
This is higher than the reported prevalence of mental health conditions in the general population of older adults in the 2022 National Study of Mental Health and Wellbeing (9.6% of people aged 65 to 85 years).
For people aged 65 years and over that entered residential aged care, a Cornell Scale for Depression tool estimated 62.5% had at least mild symptoms of depression. About 16% were recorded with major symptoms of depression.
The theme of Mental Health Month in NSW is “Taking Steps on Your Wellbeing Journey”. It is all about celebrating steps that we take towards improving our mental health and wellbeing. The theme encourages us to embrace progress, growth, and ongoing self-improvement, while reminding us that wellbeing is not a final destination but a continuous journey.
There will be times when we feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unmotivated—and that’s okay. Steps such as reaching out to someone or pausing for a moment, can help us move forward, even when progress feels slow. Our goal is to support individuals in identifying steps to improve their mental health and wellbeing while recognising that the path isn’t always straightforward. This year encourages help-seeking behaviours and fosters a supportive environment where people feel empowered to ask for help, understanding that setbacks are a natural part of the journey and can lead to greater compassion and strength.
Let’s embrace all steps, whether we’ve taken them already or are just starting. Every effort counts. Whether we’re moving forward, taking a side step, or experiencing setbacks, each part of the journey matters. This Mental Health Month, let’s support each other and recognise that each step, no matter where we are, contributes to our growth, wellbeing, and strength.
