Only in America: Trump and Kim Jong Un to meet for the first time – world wonders if they should be left in the same room
South Korea’s National Security Adviser has announced the US President and the North Korean Leader will meet by May this year to talk about a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula – a first-ever for the two countries.
[Insert Twitter quote – “Kim Jong Un talked about denuclearization with the South Korean Representatives, not just a freeze. Also, no missile testing by North Korea during this period of time. Great progress being made but sanctions will remain until an agreement is reached. Meeting being planned!”]
Tensions between the US and North Korea have escalated in the past year over nuclear and missile testing – fuelled by a series of tweets by Trump.
Trump also labelled Mr Kim “a madman who doesn’t mind starving or killing his people” (very subtle).
So will the talks defuse volatility in the region? North and South Korea have recently made efforts to renew diplomatic ties and other world leaders have expressed cautious optimism for the meeting.
Just as long as they don’t sit around comparing the size of their nuclear buttons.
