Re-name Tasmania’s Eggs and Bacon Bay – to vegan-friendly option?
Animal rights group lobbies Mayor to re-name Tasmania’s Eggs and Bacon Bay – to vegan-friendly option
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Australia has made a bid to the Huon Valley Council to change the name of the beach south of Hobart to Apple and Cherry Bay.
So what’s their crazy reasoning?
The activities are arguing the move would promote the local apple and cherry industry while encouraging residents to eat healthier.
Its Associate Director of Campaigns Ashley Fruno said: “Tasmania has the highest rate of lap-band surgery in Australia, which is not surprising considering 65 per cent of the population are overweight or obese and a whopping 93 per cent do not eat enough fruit and vegetables. Reminding residents to stay away from cholesterol- and fat-laden bacon and eggs and instead to eat the fresh plant produce of the Huon Valley might be just what the doctor ordered.”
But the proposal hasn’t gone down well with to locals or the Council, which came out with a statement saying the Bay is actually named after the wildflowers that grow on its shores.
PETA hasn’t ruled out asking for other name changes either. But really? Are we going to change Queensland’s Lamington National Park for promoting sugar? Forget about it!
