Solving chewing and swallowing problems at breakfast time

Up to 50% of residents in aged care experience dysphagia – difficulty with chewing or swallowing – which can lead to serious issues such as weight loss, regurgitation, and even choking.
Now, a new range of texture-modified breakfast foods is making mornings safer, more enjoyable, and more nutritious for these residents.
A safer, tastier start to the day
The Pure Food Co, a New Zealand-based specialist in texture-modified meals, has launched a new line of breakfast favourites developed specifically for people with swallowing difficulties. The range includes familiar and comforting options such as:
- Omelettes
- French toast
- Pork sausages
- Baked beans
Designed to meet the nutritional needs of aged care residents, these meals are enhanced with added protein and essential nutrients – helping to support health, strength, and wellbeing.
“We know that many aged care operators struggle to provide a wide variety of high-quality, nutritious breakfast options that are safe for residents on texture-modified diets to eat,” said Sam Bridgewater (pictured), Co-Founder and Co-CEO of The Pure Food Co
.

“That gap needs to be filled if providers are going to be compliant with the new standards.”
Meeting new aged care standards
From 1 July 2025, the strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards will require providers to tailor meals to individual preferences, including for those with dietary or medical needs like dysphagia.
The Pure Food Co's latest offering aims to help aged care homes meet these standards without compromising on variety or nutrition.
Growing presence in Australia
In March, The Pure Food Co announced a major partnership with Regis Aged Care, an ASX-listed provider with 67 aged care homes across Australia. The deal marks a significant expansion for the company, which already supplies 80% of New Zealand’s aged care market.
With its new breakfast range, The Pure Food Co is helping aged care residents start their day with dignity, safety, and satisfaction – one carefully crafted bite at a time.
