Video Transcript Step 2 - Get Set Up
When it comes to setting up a place in an aged care home, there is a lot of unclear steps you must take, especially if you are acting on behalf of your mum or dad or a friend.
Very quickly you will be asked to prove that you have the authority to act on their behalf. This is easy if they have ‘capacity’, meaning they are mentally and physically capable of speaking for themselves.
If not you will need one document to organise their finances (a Power of Attorney) and another document to organise their health support (an Enduring Guardianship).
To get into the aged care system, you have to register by phone with the government’s myagedcare service – you call 1800 200 422. They will give you a client record to organise a visit to your mum or dad’s home by the Aged Care Assessment Team.
Most aged care homes can’t offer you a place until you have this assessment.
Aged care is now means tested, so you have to know the wealth of your mum or dad. You will need all the bank details, value of their home and a lot more – with proof. Do you have this information?
A lot to take in. Our strong advice is to invest the time to understand all the steps laid out here at agedcare101, where aged care is made easy.
