You might be in the early stages, planning ahead, figuring out what services are available. Or you may be under pressure to get a quick solution to a pressing situation. Whatever the case, it is best you take the time to get a good understanding of the aged care system.
Australia is a world leader in both the quality of our aged care and the support the government provides. With this come rules and regulations, not to mention legal responsibilities.
Getting the best result will depend on your full understanding of the way aged care works. I promise you, a bit of time spent now will really pay off later in the quality of care, the cost and frustration. Emotions are often just below the surface.
A couple of words of warning. You may want to jump in and find a care service or home immediately, without reading the rest of the sections on agedcae101. That is fine but you will quickly learn that most care services won’t be able to help you until you have quite a lot of paperwork set up first. We have clearly explained these steps and provide all the links and tools you need to be prepared.
You also have to understand the time things take. Only in real emergencies can you get services in a matter of days – or even weeks. Allow at least a month to ‘get into the system’ so to speak – and often longer.
We suggest you start on Tab 1, aged care in Australia, but you can start wherever you like and move back and forth.
